File an RTI application
Ask any government office for information under the Right to Information Act, 2005. Fee Rs 10.
Where: The Public Information Officer (PIO) of the office that holds the information
Steps
- 1
Find the right office. Write to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the department or office that holds the information, for example the Collectorate, the municipality or the DTO.
- 2
Write your questions clearly on plain paper, with your name and postal address. You do not have to give a reason.
- 3
Pay Rs 10 by cash against a receipt, demand draft, banker's cheque or Indian Postal Order. Citizens below the poverty line pay no fee (attach proof).
- 4
Wait for the reply. The PIO must reply within 30 days, or within 48 hours if the matter concerns someone's life or liberty. Copies cost extra, usually Rs 2 a page.
- 5
First appeal: if you get no reply in 30 days, or you are unhappy with it, appeal to the office's First Appellate Authority within 30 days.
- 6
Second appeal: if the first appeal does not help, appeal to the Telangana State Information Commission within 90 days. For central offices (post office, railways, central universities) the second appeal goes to the Central Information Commission.
- 7
Central government offices also take RTI applications online at rtionline.gov.in. That portal does not cover state offices.
Fees
As listed on the official fee page when we checked (October 2026). Check the official page before paying.
